Halloween and all that jazz - Halloween und all sowas

I know it's been quite a while...shame on me.
Yesterday saw our long awaited halloween party that was an absolute success. I think we have enough cake and crisps left to the end of the term at least. Additionally, I will be priviliged in getting a family receipe for an amazing vegetable curry that someone brought yesterday. I also got a six layer sponge cake from a friend because I proof read her essay at 9 in the morning of the deadline day. I'll certainly proof read again! ^^
A friend and I also went to see The Idiot Colony yesterday, a compelling, disturbing, beautiful and utterly breathtaking play by Red Cape Theatre. It sort of killed the party mood but it was definitely worth it.
Today it has started raining, autumn is here at last.
I am still enjoying myself hugely, my first essay was handed in last week and the assessment for my Text Workshop will begin soon.

Der letzte Post ist eine ganze Weile her, ich weiß, Asche auf mein Haupt.
Gestern war endlich unsere lang ersehnte Halloweenparty, die ein voller Erfolg wurde. Ich glaube, wir haben genug Kuchen und Chips bis mindestens zum Ende des Semesters. Zusätzlich wird mir das Privileg zuteil, ein Familienrezept für ein Gemüsecurry zu bekommen, das jemand zur Party gebracht hatte. Ich bekam auch einen sechslagigen Kuchen, da ich den Aufsatz einer Freundin um 9 morgens am Tag der Deadline Korrektur las. Ich werde definitiv wieder Korrektur lesen! ^^
Eine Freundin und ich sahen gestern The Idiot Colony, ein unwiderstehliches, verstörendes, schönes und atemberaubendes Theaterstück von Red Cape Theatre. Es zerstörte die Feierstimmung so ziemlich ganz, aber das war es auf jeden Fall wert.
Heute hat der Regen begonnen, es ist Herbst.
Ich habe immer noch viel Spaß, mein erster Aufsatz wurde letzte Woche eingereicht und die Bewertung für den Text Workshop beginnt demnächst.

Update

Since I am having such a great time that I am forgetting how long I have actually been here, I kept this post's title simple. ^^
I am enjoying my course hugely (Scenography and Theatre Design & Drama and Theatre Studies...probably the longest possible title for a course). It consists of a lecture, three seminars and a viewing per week and I am having the best time. In the lectures, of course, the participation is limited to listening, but the rest is quite interactive and it is fascinating to gain insight in to other people's minds in relation to drama, theatre, performance and scenography. (Scenography being set, light, sound, costume and what have you)
I especially enjoy scenography and based on last week's viewing I highly recommend anyone interested in light art to have a look at the American artist James Turrell, he is amazing! Especially his 'spyspaces' are of magical beauty.
I have not yet managed to get up on Constitution Hill but who knows, maybe next weekend?
Finally, I have found someone in my course (who incidentally fences as well) who will join me in my quest for a choir because I feel the need to sing and I really think my housemates might appreciate me doing it somewhere else but the kitchen. ^^
Oh, and the weather is still lovely! (Can someone pinch me, I must be dreaming...)

Da ich so eine wunderbare Zeit verlebe, dass ich vergesse, wie lange ich schon hier bin, habe ich den Titel bewusst einfach gehalten. ^^
Ich genieße meinen Kurs enorm (Scenography and Theatre Design & Drama and Theatre Studies...wahrscheinlich der längstmögliche Kurstitel). Er besteht aus einer Vorlesung, drei Seminaren und einem Viewing pro Woche und ich koste es voll aus. In den Vorlesungen ist die Beteiligung natürlich aufs Zuhören beschränkt, aber der Rest ist sehr interaktiv und ich bin fasziniert von den Einblicken in anderer Leute Ansichten in Bezug auf Drama, Theater und Performance, sowie Szenographie. (Szenographie beinhaltet Bühne, Bühnenbild, Licht, Ton, Kostüm und viel anderes)
Ich habe besonders viel Spaß an Szenographie und basierend auf dem Viewing von letzter Woche kann ich den amerikanischen Künstler James Turrell jedem wärmestens empfehlen, der Interesse an Lichtkunst hat. Er ist unglaublich! Besonders seine 'skyspaces' sind von magischer Schönheit.
Ich habe es immer noch nicht fertig gebracht auf den Constitution Hill zu laufen, aber wer weiß, vielleicht nächstes Wochenende?
Zu guter Letzt habe ich in meinem Kurs jemanden gefunden (die zufällig auch fechtet), die mit mir auf die Suche nach einem Chor gehen wird. Ich fühle den Drang zu singen und ich glaube, meine Mitbewohner würden es wertschätzen, wenn ich es woanders als in der Küche täte. ^^
Oh, und das Wetter ist immer noch fabelhaft! (Kann mich mal jemand kneifen, ich muss am Träumen sein...)

Week one - Die erste Woche

So far, everthing has been brilliant. The past week went by in a flash full of introductory meetings, pubs and parties. Met my housemates and they are lovely: Three of them do politics of some sort, one does English literature and the last does Drama, as do I. We have been having a great time and no end in sight!
Even though we're pretty high up, all roads appear to have an upward slope, no matter where you are going. That hill is going to be my best friend by the end of my degree, I swear....until then I'll huff and puff and whine. ^^
Enough of the talk (most of Freshers' Week is not supposed to become public knowledge anyway), here are some pictures of my room:




We're one of the few houses that have six people living in them, if you get a house of five, the rooms are much bigger, but this is an acceptable size, approximately 14m².

Bis jetzt war alles fantastisch. Die letzte Woche verging wie im Flug, voller Einführungstreffen, Pubs und Parties. Ich traf meine Mitbewohner und sie sind alle sehr nett: Drei von ihnen studieren Politik mit variablen Nebenfächern, einer studiert Englische Literatur und die Letzte studiert Theater, so wie ich. Wir hatten eine tolle Zeit bis jetzt und es ist kein Ende in Sicht!
Obwohl wir schon relativ weit oben sind, scheint es, als führten alle Straßen bergauf, egal wohin man geht. Am Ende meines Studiumd wird der Hügel mein bester Freund sein, ich schwöre es...aber bis dahin werde ich japsen und schnauben und jammern. ^^
Genug geredet (das meiste der Freshers' Week ist sowieso nicht für die Öffentlichkeit), oben seht ihr ein paar Bilder meines Zimmers. Wir sind eins der wenigen Häuser mit sechs Leuten, wenn man zu fünft in einem Haus ist, sind die Zimmer deutlich größer. Dieses hat allerdings eine akzeptable Größe, ca. 14m².

Praise the IT people! - Lobet die EDV!

I moved in yesterday, everything went smoothly (also thanks to a friendly Indian guy who helped me carry my heaviest box) and I even got my internet set up straight away. That is, after waiting quite some time for the computing advisory help desk. BUT, and that's important, they only take so long, because they really try and solve every problem they're presented with. So thanks to them!
Now, TODAY, everything went awry: my firefox kept crashing and everything didn't work out. After going to advisory again, they referred me on to the computer operators (who are terribly hidden! So difficult to find! Maybe it's departmental requirements?) who graciously refrained from lecturing me about my outdated anti-virus programme, gave me a new one, explained the steps to be taken and signed me up for the so-called workshop, who'll help me out if I can't fix it on my own. Praise be! Truly, I am considering baking a cake for them, they're just so friendly and helpful! Any recipies involving coffee out there? (Because they do live off coffee...they told me themselves.)
My residence is brilliant, rooms are spacious enough, the kitchen is great, the water pressure and temperature are faultless and I can even see a tiny speck of ocean from my window. As soon as I get some acceptable pictures of the facilities here, I'll post them. I'm in Pentre Jane Morgan, the student village, literally five minutes away from campus.
So that's that, weather is still lovely and I'm glad to be here.

Gestern zog ich ein und alles lief glatt (was ich auch einem freundlichen Inder zu verdanken habe, der mir half meine schwerste Kiste zu tragen) und ich bekam sogar gleich mein Internet zum laufen. Naja, gleich nachdem ich eine ganze Weile beim computing advisory help desk angestanden hatte. ABER, das ist der wichtige Teil, sie brauchen nur so lange, weil sich sich jeden Problems wirklich annehmen und es so gut wie möglich lösen. Also vielen Dank an sie!
HEUTE wiederum begann alles zu spinnen: mein Firefox stürzte ständig ab und alles funktionierte nicht mehr richtig. Nachdem ich wieder beim help desk gewesen war, gaben die mich weiter an die computer operator (die unglaublich schwer zu finden sind! Total versteckt! Vielleicht ist das Teil des Berufsausschreibung?), die freundlicherweise davon absahen, mich über meine outdated anti-vir software zu belehren, mir die neueste Version gaben, erklärten, was ich machen muss und mich noch dazu auf eine Liste setzten für den sogenannten Workshop, die mir helfen werden, wenn es jetzt immer noch spinnen sollte. Gelobet sollen sie sein! Ich überlege ernsthaft, ob ich ihnen einen Kuchen backe, sie sind so freundlich und hilfrecih! Irgendwelche Vorschläge mit Kaffee? (Denn davon leben sie, sie haben es mit selbst gesagt...)
Mein Wohnheim ist klasse, die Zimmer sind geräumig, die Küche ist fantastisch, Wasserdruck und -temperatur sind ohne Tadel und ich kann von meinem Zimmer aus sogar ein bisschen Meer sehen. Sobald ich ordentliche Bilder habe, poste ich sie. Ich bin in Pentre Jane Morgan, dem Studentendorf, tatsächlich nur fünf Minuten vom Campus entfernt.
So viel dazu, das Wetter ist immer noch schön und ich bin froh, hier zu sein.

Miracles, butterflies and sunshine - Wunder, Schmetterlinge, Sonnenschein

Remember all the drama that developed when I tried to store my stuff at the uni? I won't go into detail but I'll say this much: persistence pays off, there are helping angels on Penglais Campus and I won't have to face an odyssee to retrieve my luggage. I am very happy about that.
Sunshine has continued throughout the week and even now that I'm back in Glasgow with my sister, the streets are dry and the sky is blue.


The past few days were quite excitable, I spent an amazing night with my parents at Tyddyn Chambers (I warmly recommend it! www.tyddynchambers.uk), a farm house b&b, and had the best pub grub at The Corporation Arms in Ruthin.
When the luggage was sorted out, we went on a trip that took us to The Magic of Life Butterfly House in Cwm Rheidol (www.magicoflife.org) where we also had a look at the Hydroelectric Scheme. Furthermore, we went to Hafod Estate (www.hafod.org), which is breathtaking but be warned: you need waterproof, sturdy footwear, you really do.
Oh, and here's "ocean and sheep", since the mountains are included higher up. ^^






Erinnert ihr euch noch an das Drama bezüglich der Unterbingung meines Gepäcks?
Ich werde nicht in Detail gehen, aber so viel sei gesagt: Durchhaltevermögen zahlt sich aus, es gibt helfende Engel auf Penglais Campus und mit steht keine Odyssee bevor, um mein Gepäck wieder zu bekommen. Ich bin sehr glücklich darüber.
Die ganze letzte Woche schien die Sonne und sogar jetzt, wo ich wieder bei meiner Schwester in Glasgow bin, sind die Straßen trocken und der Himmel blau.
Die letzten paar Tage waren wundervoll, meine Eltern und ich hatten eine unglaublich tolle Übernachtung in Tyddyn Chambers, einem Farmhaus Bed&Breakfast (nur zu empfehlen! Link siehe oben) und hatten das absolut beste Pub Essen in The Corporation Arms in Ruthin.
Als das Drama mit der Gepäck das gelöst war, machten wir einen Ausflug ins Hinterland, der das Schmetterlingshaus in Cwm Rheidol, das Wasserkraftwerk dort und Hafod Estate beinhaltete, die Links sind oben. Letzteres is besonders atemberaubend, aber festes, wasserfestes Schuhwerk ist ein Muss!
Im Text oben sind jetzt endlich auch die vielgenannten Berge, Schafe und das Meer.

Wishing and Hoping

Well, I have been in Britain for about a week now, spending my time at my sister's place in Glasgow. The sun is shining (yes, really!) and yesterday we had a trip to Loch Lomond. All in all very relaxed.
I have bought a British cell phone and am quite happy that I won't have to open up a British bank account, since that is terribly complicated if you are a foreigner. I'm hoping that the storage company that is supposed to be in the centre of Aberystwyth but whose phone numbers didn't exist and who didn't answer my emails does exist after all (I'll discover upon arrival, I suppose, the day after tomorrow), since otherwise I face four miles to Llanfarian, which isn't too far but if I have the choice between four miles distance between my residence and my stored luggage and one mile distance, I prefer the latter.
There isn't much else to write about since I am still not THERE, but it is coming up soon, I promise, along with some photos of said surroundings.

Seit etwa einer Woche bin ich nun in Großbritannien, bei meiner Schwester in Glasgow. Die Sonne scheint (ehrlich!) und gestern waren wir am Loch Lomond. Alles in allem sehr entspannt.
Ich habe mir ein Britisches Handy zugelegt und bin sehr erleichtert, dass ich nicht auch noch ein Britisches Konto eröffnen muss, es ist nämlich fürchterlich kompliziert für Ausländer. Ich hoffe, dass die andere Storage Firma im Zentrum von Aberystwyth doch existiert, obwohl ihre Telefonnummern tot waren und sie meine Mails nicht beantworteten, da mir sonst vier Meilen nach Llanfarian drohen. Das ist nicht wirklich weit, aber wenn ich die Wahl zwischen vier Meilen zwischen meinem Wohnheim und meinem Gepäck und einer Meile habe, ist Letzteres zu bevorzugen.
Sonst gibt es nicht viel zu erzählen, da ich immer noch nicht wirklich DA bin, aber bald ist es soweit; dann kommen auch die angekündigten Fotos der Umgebung.
